A phone-free meal: prepare the moment together

A simple idea to plan together, taking everyone’s needs into account.

A meal can be an easy moment to define: people gather, eat, then return to their activities. To give it more space, suggest the same rule to everyone present and agree on it together before the meal.

A clear suggestion

“Shall we try putting our phones away during this meal?” works better than a rule discovered the first time someone looks at a screen. Choose an accessible place to leave them. There is no need to confiscate them or turn it into a competition.

Plan for exceptions

Someone may be waiting for an important call, using an accessibility tool or needing to stay reachable. Allow for these situations without asking them to share personal details with the whole group. If the menu or payment requires a QR code, it can help to sort that out before putting devices away.

Let the meal unfold

A conversation does not need to be intense for the moment to matter. You can talk, listen or enjoy a silence. With children, setting an example and talking things through are part of the experiment; this article does not replace age-appropriate guidance.

Keep what works

At the end, simply talk about the experience. Was it enjoyable? Was an exception missing? Would you like to do it again? Life offline remains a practical possibility to organise together.
