Make room for life offline, without switching everything off

Start with one specific moment, keep the essentials and adjust gradually.

Phones do many useful things. A simple place to start is this: in which moment would you like your phone to take up less space? A meal, a walk, a book, a conversation. Choose a specific moment rather than an ambition to change your whole life at once.

Start with what you want to reconnect with

Write one sentence: “During this moment, I’d like to be able to…” Finish a few pages, listen to someone, notice your surroundings. This intention helps you choose a specific adjustment. Try leaving your phone in a place you decide beforehand and preparing whatever you will need without it.

Keep what you need

Being reachable by someone or able to make a call may be part of your circumstances. Decide what must remain available before changing settings. The point of this experiment is not to make an essential tool unusable.

Reduce one distraction at a time

Identify an app or a type of notification that often interrupts this moment. Start there. On Android, Digital Wellbeing may show time spent, app opens and notifications, and offer timers depending on your device. Options and availability vary: use the documentation for your phone. Reflect on the experience

Afterwards, ask yourself what felt pleasant, awkward or impractical. Adjust where you leave your phone, the timing or the exceptions. No number of minutes needs to become a moral score. Keep a habit that helps and drop one that does not suit you.
